Who we are
The Fashion Aperture is a fashion buying consultancy founded by Melissa Selbert, a seasoned fashion buyer and merchant with nearly two decades of experience across luxury, contemporary, and heritage-driven retail, and all women’s categories.
Her buying career began at Barneys New York—an iconic starting point—where she worked with brands like The Row, Erdem, and Sacai. From there, she joined Scoop NYC, mastering the fast-turn world of contemporary fashion: think denim, best-seller based assortments, and the beloved Scoop Beach concept that helped define an era. She scouted and onboarded new brands like Frame Denim and Jonathan Simkhai, helping shape the vendor mix with a forward eye.
Melissa later took on leadership buying roles at Planet Blue and Sundance, honing her ability to think both nimbly and long-term. At Planet Blue, she leaned into a trend-driven, West Coast cool aesthetic. At Sundance, she refined assortments for a more classic, heritage-inspired customer—deepening her skill in merchandising strategy across different consumer mindsets.
But through it all, one passion held steady: her love for independent boutiques.
Specialty stores are where the magic still happens. They reflect their neighborhoods. They take risks. They connect. In a sea of sameness, they're the ones that still have a point of view—and The Fashion Aperture was built to help protect and grow that vision.
The name “Aperture” comes from Melissa’s photography background. It’s about clarity, focus, and light—the vision she brings to every engagement as a fashion buying consultant. She sees the artistry in fashion design, but pairs it with the commercial acumen to build a profitable, sustainable business. Her process is part intuition, part spreadsheet.
